16/12/10 - Destruction !

Destruction !
Following the line of the trees for about 100m there used to be a reed bed that took the overflow water from the houses about 500m away on the right. The reeds were home to many birds and other animals that took shelter there or used the materials for nests etc. But the reeds were not up to standard and the drainage was not good enough so they ha to go and a gravel drainage ditch had to be built.

I am told that it will, in time, re-grow ... but what of now ?

The two of us
These two pigeons have lived with us for three years now. They are always together/apart ... if you see what I mean

29/06/10 - Heron - rusting nicely

Heron - rusting nicely
The sculptured heron has had a place in the garden for a number of years now ... he gets moved from place to place and provides a convenient perch for the robin.

08/04/10 - Squirrel proof

Squirrel proof
This iron barred cage is said to be 'squirrel proof'. Nothing else has been so far. So to celebrate the sun coming out and it getting warmer at last I have invested in a new bird feeder. Is this a question of hope over expectation I wonder?

18/02/10 - Togetherness

Togetherness
This pair of pigeons, born in the garden, have been together now for three years. Every morning they sit on the fence usually ignoring each other - in the guise of 'I know you are there and it means something to me and I couldn't be without you.'

05/02/10 - Pigeon Roost

Pigeon Roost
Taken with my iPhone into the sun - about 100 or more pigeons roost on the roof and in the roof of this derelict house. When they are all up and flying it reminds me of the starling roosts on the Severn Estuary near Gloucester.

'The time has come,' the Walrus said ... To have all the trees/shrubs etc in the garden lopped/cut/shaped and otherwise tidied up. So the 'man' arrived this morning with all of the right tools and safety kit and, as you can see, is halfway up the large, overgrown laurel. I am unsure what all of the birds think about this. The male blackbird has been hopping from branch to branch all morning as if to say - 'Excuse me, excuse me. Did I invite you to do this?'

Tried to get a pic of the robin standing on the heron's head but was not quick enough. (The heron is now a rusting iron favourite perch for our garden birds)

The sparrowhawk sat on the tree in the garden for ages. Scared all of the finches away and eventually flew off without any lunch ... I need a better camera or the ability to fiddle with photos !
