23/10/10 - Trees in decline

Trees in decline
Behind them, on the edge of the wood, trees still stand in full leaf at the end of October. But in the field are those that have seen few leaves this year and perhaps will never see leaves again. I fancy that the winter winds will break their naked and de-barked boughs, and, come next spring, they will lie horizontally pending endless decay, their life and job done.

I wonder at their age and what they might have seen and how many summer suns have warmed them. I wonder how many sheep have sheltered in their shade and under their rain battered umbrellas.

The grass is green this year and the October sky is blue ... the weak sunlight highlights the passage of yet another year.
